Silicone RTV Coating

Insulator Protection Against Pollution Flash-Over

CharCoat IC

Unique silicone elastomer coating preventing pollution flash-over on high voltage insulators.

CharCoat IC is a room-temperature vulcanized (RTV) silicone elastomer coating designed to protect high voltage outdoor insulators from pollution flash-over. Developed in collaboration with the Electric Power Research Group at the University of the Witwatersrand, it leverages advanced silicone technology to ensure reliable performance in harsh, polluted environments. Its hydrophobic properties prevent the formation of conductive layers, enhancing system reliability.

Core Technology: Hydrophobic silicone elastomer with low molecular weight silane migration.

How It Works

CharCoat IC’s exceptional hydrophobicity inhibits moist conductive layers on insulator surfaces, limiting leakage currents and preventing dry band formation and partial discharges—key factors in flash-over. The coating transfers its water-repellent properties to contaminants via silane migration, maintaining performance even in severe conditions. Its specialized fillers resist power arc damage, and the primer ensures strong adhesion to ceramic, glass, and resin surfaces.
